#179556 - Counterfeit Maxim parts
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I had my share of counterfeit Maxim parts - the ones in this instance were supposed to be MAX487 but I suspect they were something like 75176 which are logically the same. Had I used them in the usual connection to a microcontroller, then I doubt I would've picked it up but the application was a RS485 hub that uses monostables to time the bus turn around. 75176 glitch on the turnaround whereas MAX487s don't. So with the dud parts the hub would oscillate. Reported it to Maxim and they confirmed it was counterfeit. The source of the parts were unknown (at least to me). The board assembler again went through a buying house for the replacement parts but this time I demanded to see evidience that the parts came from a franchised ditributor - Digikey in this instance. The board asembler had a bad run on this board run - they got leaded pcbs for what was to be an unleaded board. The board assembler shrugged their shoulders and didn't want to remake the boards. We no longer use that board assembler.

Ha, ha, the capacitors are too big!            01/01/70 00:00
      maybe they're too small ...            01/01/70 00:00
no caps are not too big            01/01/70 00:00
did you verify the output voltages?            01/01/70 00:00
   They were a good deal...            01/01/70 00:00
      yes, I learned            01/01/70 00:00
   here is a simple log            01/01/70 00:00
      here's a log from a real max232            01/01/70 00:00

                                       The MAX232 was replaced by MAX232A            01/01/70 00:00

I doubt MAXIM would allow garbage out the door.            01/01/70 00:00
