#179406 - How did you test 'em?

Out of the whole shipment

How many was that?

it overruns my serial port on the PC so bad that not even another working device will work. I had to reboot the PC a few times in order to straighten it out.

A dodgy (or non-functional) MAX232 shouldn't have that effect - I think you (also) have other issues!

Upon further investigation, I replaced the "max232" with a real one, and it worked every time. I did this for a few others and they also worked.

Did you also probe a unit with a scope, to see what was actually happening at the pins?
- were signal levels correct?
- were the voltage multipliers working?
- etc?

Just swapping the chip is a bit crude; eg, the problem may just have been down to bad soldering...

Should I report the guy to MAXIM here:

Probably worth doing a bit more rigorous testing first, but yes - they may well be able to investigate further...

They were a good deal.

No - they were quite evidently not a good deal!

You mean they were cheap - which is not at all the same thing as "good value" !

I should have known it was too good to be true.

Ah yes - hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I heard of other guys being scammed for some atmel avr's

You mean this: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/news.php?id=350 ?

Beware. It happened twice now to me, not a lot of money for me but still it hurts.

Hmmm - sad, but true.

      maybe they're too small ...            01/01/70 00:00
no caps are not too big            01/01/70 00:00
did you verify the output voltages?            01/01/70 00:00
   They were a good deal...            01/01/70 00:00
      yes, I learned            01/01/70 00:00
   here is a simple log            01/01/70 00:00
      here's a log from a real max232            01/01/70 00:00
it does no matter, but            01/01/70 00:00
