Because the original MAX232 was so noisy, owing to its large capacitors in the charge pump, it was modified/improved to reduce the noise and the accompanying size of the cap's.

That certainly is not a case in which one would want to counterfeit the old, seriously troubled part, particularly since it costs less than a buck.

If I were counterfeiting, I'd put the later part number on it.
