Did you use the same application on all the PCs?

A problem like this really shouldn't cause the PC to lock-up; so I would very much suspect that it's a software issue with the application not properly handling invlaid data - rather than anything at the serial port hardware level...

But I could be wrong there!

Are you using "real" COM: ports, or USB-to-RS232 adaptors...?
