Digikey is not always the best source. They're often VERY proud of the products they offer.

Last time I bought MAX232A they were under $1, and so were MAX232, but not as much under $1. I wouldn't have bought them if they were cheaper, but the older parts cost more.

Now, what I've most often advocated is to use the "tried and true" when you've already got 'em. There is a difference, you know.
