This is the controller I integrate into one of my top instruments.

It costs me about 180 quid, as I buy it, with RS485 ModBus control, and a programmable analogue output (0..5) (0..10)

....and yes, it uses an 8052 ! - I took it to bits.....

THIS is the kind of competition in the professional market.

That said, there are lots of amateurs who are messing around with heaters these days - check out
http://www.instrucables.com for projects that could benefit with a low-cost offer.

If you're going to make a stab at it, you'll NEED to go SMT for production.
