Ants go for food using "scouts". Just make sure the ant is contained and the surface is perfectly clean. The ant will always look for food when there is none to be found. Otherwise use a different organism that can be easily controlled. Just for fun http://books.google.com/books?id=...om&f=false I would say Fig 2 (actual ant movement) is more random than Fig 1 (simulated ant movement).
