I think the fact that they had actually thought carefully about the needs of their customers - even before they were actual customers - counted towards to decision to buy it! It really is sad how few software vendors even seem to have thought about this; surely, they must use and evaluate software themselves - so they must know what a pain it is...?! One refreshing approach to "evaluation" licensing is CodeRed, who do a toolset for the Luminary Micro (now TI) chips: their "evaluation" is unrestricted in code size & features, but is locked to a Luminary Dev Board - so you can explore the full capabilities of the tools to the full capabilities of the chip on the Dev Board. Only when you actually come to make your own target hardware do you need to pay-up for the "full" licence. |
