It depends on how much you want to change. Erik stated earlier, that the heat dissipation could be too high, when powering a TO92 packaged 3.3V regulator by 9V. Another trap is the LDO you might need to use as regulator. These beasts are intrinsically unstable and need a certain decoupling cap at output. So, you might also need to change all the decoupling caps on your board.
