#120277 - Some problems I see... Responding to: ???'s previous message |
is you have lots of people coming here already struggling with the english language. You're not going to allow a post with typos or something that may look like SMS, so this poor fellow is going to spend a couple of hours looking in a dictionary to try and find a word that's not spelled right. Let's take for example the word "knowledge" and he has spelled it "noledge", he's not going to look under K because it sounds like it starts with N. Well we know he's not going to find it under K, so after 5 words or so... he's probably going to give up. Just ran him off instead of getting a new member.
You could have suggested words, but that just added another increase to the horsepower required. Yes, words can be added to a dictionary, but who's going to do that? The moderators, so they'll need to be available 24/7 until all the words are straighted out. "Hey Craig, your damned spell checker won't take my new AT89SST52 chip name, so now I can't give all the information I need to. Can you fix it for me?" Then there are words like "know" and "no" that I've seen spelled "now", and a spelling checker would go right past that because it doesn't know context. Yes it could be done, with added cost for a new server fast enough to check one of your 1000 word postings and still keep serving up information to (a guess here) an average of 50 users at the same time. I'd say a quick scan of a post for the most common SMS "terms" might work alot easier and faster. Jon |
