#120271 - Those are "out there" Responding to: ???'s previous message |
There are plenty of "large" and adpative dictionaries available as part of other software. Yes, it would be a task of some proportion to adapt one of the common spell-checkers to processing posts on the server that hosts this forum. However, once done, and past the initial struggle, it would save a LOT of hassle.
Yes, those who want to can spell-check their messages, but the problem comes not from them, but from the guys who want quickly to dash off a reply and don't even bother, to proofread their reply. If it's not do-able, I can accept that, but, if it is, and I know that it could be done, it would be of such significant benefit to the community at large, that I don't think one would want simply to skip it because it's a bit of a bother. Alternate spellings such as color vs. colour, prioritize vs. prioritise, and abbreviations commonly used in ordinary writtne prose, e.g. etc, (or e.g. and i.e. or et al) can be introduced in the same way as new words, too. If a word doesn't appear in the global spelling reference, then it's likely few persons for whom English is not their primary language will understand it, or, at least, interpret it correctly. I favor this, not because I'm all hung up on spelling, but because I'd like to see a reduction in the bandwidth wasted on unintelligible SMS or on typo's, or on words so badly misspelled, for any reason, that their meaning is lost.
