The Atmel 'cable' is dependent on your PC having an LPT port.

This is considerably less reliable than an 'intelligent' ISP programmer that uses a MCU.

The original link in the original post looks a very good deal. I expect that the items are 'cheap and nasty' but otherwise should work.

The original 'usbasp' programmer firmware was not capable of programming the AT89S devices. I suspect that the nice Chinese people have replaced this firmware so that you can program AT89S51 and AT89S52. (I have firmware that will do AT89S8252, AT89S53, AT89S8253 as well as all AVR devices)

There is no possibility at all of this 'usbasp' programmer working with Atmel AT89C devices nor with other 8051 types.
