Verilog was "ready for prime time" sooner than VHDL, though VHDL has a lot more potential overall. When businesses wanted their products out the door, they bought Verilog because it was useable several years before VHDL was equally so. Today, all bets are off, though Verilog is still very popular among U.S. users.
