Thanks for the responses, they've given me something to think about.

My project is a PCIe data acquisition board with some DSP in the FPGA. I'm currently looking at an Altera Cyclone IV GX, so I'm using the Altera Quartus software. I like the idea of strong typing in VHDL for my arithmetic as I will probably be using plenty of weird bit lengths.
