the db can be migrated to a newer forum. Can it? Even if it can, can it be done easily and quickly? More importantly, could it be done more easily and more quicky that addressing the issues (which are mostly minor) in the current setup? And would those other products support the additional feature requests that are being suggested here? Sierra Wireless have just re-styled the old Wavecom forum as Sierra Wireless - and they've really messed it up! It was just a re-styling (maybe also re-hosting); they did not change forum software (phpBB) - so it is clearly not trivial to manage these things! Similarly, ST have just changed their forum software - it took them seveal months between anouncing it and the changeover actually taking place, and the forum was offline for a week while they did the actual changeover. Again, these things are clearly not trivial! In my opinion is better a time of headaches to migrate forum's db and after just forget about web programming. Clearly, that's not Craig's view. He did outline his intentions with the site redesign and, IIRC, this included considering and rejecting the "off-the-shelf" forum offerings. You could try a search to see if you can find the discussions... Our core bussiness is 8052 programming. But, presumably, Craig feels that it is (sufficiently close to) his core business? there is no chance to make a comparable software with other guys that make webprogramming everyday How do you know that "web programming" isn't part of Craig's everyday business? Maybe we should think how to migrate current history db to a popular forum. There would need to be some compelling reason to do that. I don't see any compelling reason - there are pros & cons to both this forum and the "standard" offerings. |
