I think those things are really expensive?!
And they are often no easier to solder than the chip itself!

Places like Winslow Adaptics will fit a chip onto one of their standard adaptors for you - for a fee. This might work out cheaper than the cost of a socket...

I still think a Dev Kit would be the best option - provided the University permits it.
