So what you actaully need is some kind of Non-Volatile Read/Write memory.

Two options have already been mentioned:
  • Battery-backup on a standard SRAM;
  • FRAM (Ferroelectric RAM).

    Various other options are also available - the search keyword that you require is Non-Volatile

    Note that many non-volatile storage devices (including things commonly known as "EEPROMs") have serial interfaces such as I2C or SPI - that's not quite as simple as just using MOVX, but it's not hard.

    Also, some processors have some built-in non-volatile storage...
