Is this device type lower in cost than standard SD+connector?

I don't know!
The project that provoked my interest in this has now gone, so I didn't pursue it. Just posting this for completeness, really.

However, I imagine that the real cost is not just the parts cost of "card+connector" vs "chip", but also all the added costs of having to insert the card during production, etc...

If not, what's the advantage?

See above.

The other thing that springs to mind is just that old fact that mechanical connectors are always a source of unreliability and, therefore, best avoided if at all possible...!

Also, in the blurb, they talk of using it as a boot device - If you were doing that, I guess it would be important for it to be non-removable...!

of course not, it's just one task of many ;-)            01/01/70 00:00

Show me your solderable SD module            01/01/70 00:00
                           there's nothing to prevent you from soldering a micro-SD            01/01/70 00:00
