I don't think that's a valid conclusion at all!

At these kinds of events, exhibitors always want to concentrate on their latest & greatest; the 8051 isn't going to be "latest & greatest" - but that certainly doesn't mean that it's dead!

I'm sure there were a whole load of other bread-and-butter components that were also not exhibited - RAM, Flash, transistors, resistors, etc - but that doesn't mean that they're moribund!
