#164092 - 2009 Embedded Systems Conference Trip Report |
I went to the ESC in San Jose. Judging from the show, the 8051 architecture is dead.
NXP The NXP booth was only pushing ARM processors. They did have a nice canvass bag as a give-away. Atmel Atmel main push was AVR / ATMEGA, and with a smaller emphasis on ARMs. Not a word about 8051s. As a note, the Atmel Booth was next to the Microchip booth. Microchip had erected large posters on a wall attacking Atmel processor performance. The wall ran the length of the Atmel booth and was visible everywhere in the booth. It was pretty tacky, especially given their recent acquisition attempt. Silicon Labs Silicon Labs was a no-show. -------- I only saw two 8051s at the show. One was in the back of a RAMTRON brochure on their FRAM. It didn't seem to be a real part. The second was at a software company's booth, in a development board, showing their software worked with Silicon Labs parts. -------- Overall, the show was much smaller than the last time I went in 2007. It was not very crowded either. I had considered exhibiting there, and I am so glad I didn't. |
