#155348 - To calm my boss...
Responding to: ???'s previous message

These might sound like extreme cases, maybe the 0.1%; but again, how do you know this is not Alex's case? Why do you refuse to answer his original question - maybe including a line saying "make your desing sound first", why not?

Relax, Jan, why are you so upset? Remember what Alex said:

Alex said:
I am using a AT89C55WD and enable the watchdog function, however, when the power is unstable, or such as lightning or any other strange events, the processsors stop.

He seems to have problems quite often, which is a strong indication for an improper design. Would he use a good filtering he would have less problems, and then he could still use his watchdog. It would be a mistake to literally answer his question, because this would lead him to believe that he is headed in the right direction with his watchdog. It would be the total wrong signal to support his watchdog idea. The truth is that the he has an entirely improper hardware design, when he suffers so often from "unstable power, lightning and other strange events".

Jan, you can achieve 40...60dB (and even more) noise reduction per low pass filtering. Don't you think that it is a much better approach to use intense filtering and shielding near your "close radar station" then to trust a stupid watchdog, you even don't know how it actually works??

Do I use a watchdog? Yes. Do I trust him? No!

You can totally eliminate any noise by the smart use of filtering, grounding, shielding and other measures. But a watchdog is not a smart measure! People who want to cure a noise immunity problem by the help of a watchdog have nothing understood and should visit an experienced EMI engineer!!
