Back then, what they did was to say, "Can we sell you the faster parts at the proposed slower-part price? It's your choice, but you can have the fast parts by Wednesday, but the slower ones won't be available until Novemeber of next year."

This was, of course, when folks bought DRAMs for PC's. PC's didn't care how fast the parts were, so long as they were "fast enough."
