#163950 - Constant misunderstandings, or kicking in open doors Responding to: ???'s previous message |
You are regularly contesting what isn't contested, or responding about totally different things. I have to assume that it is a language barrier.

We do not have any responsibility for the original poster. If he asks for help in a final year project two days before the headline, then it's on him how the solves his problems. That is the best thing you have said in this thread. So, why are you then accusing the people who have posted in this thread for not having helped him? Why are you claiming that the only help he as received has been with the assumption that he has to bow? But why are you even debating this? Have you seen anyone claim that we are required to help? Have I said that we are at error if the time isn't enough? Kai said:
Again, this is a forum, where we discuss, talk and have fun. Everyone can rise his question and everyone can enter into the discussion. Nobody is forced to give feedback or anything else. Well, if he is smart he will answer all questions in full deatil, because then the chance of receiving good answers is very high. Correct. No one is forced to answer questions. And no one is forced to receive answers that will be custom-applicable to his own project. But no one has claimed so either, so what are you arguing about? Kai said:

I have very much the right to request more information, if I find that there is too little information available to be able to help. Are you suggesting that I should lie and invent random help instead? Or do you think requesters are better helped by just being ignored? Rethink your view of how a forum works. The forum rules says: If you feel the person asking the question hasn't spent enough time reading documentation, either ignore the question or vote it as "Didn't Search First." Did you read the word ignore? Yes, it's intended to ignore the original poster if he doesn't give enough feedback. Now you are barking up the wrong tree again. You are extrapolating what you are reading. Since the information has been written multiple times by multiple persons in multiple ways, I must assume that you are intentionally deciding to misunderstand. The forum rule is about people lazy enough to not search for information before asking a question. What I are discussing is something completely different. The OP gets follow-up questions about his hardware and his design, to allow people to make answers applicable to his hardware and design. That is something not covered in the forum rules, and something that should not need to be covered in any forum rules. We can't help the OP with good resistor values unless we know what diodes he has. You may decide to vote "Didn't Search First", if you find voting a funny activity. I don't so I don't see this as a "Didn't Search First" question, but as a "Didn't understand the problem" question, i.e. something the OP needs help with, not something the OP should be ignored because of. So, how do you best help the OP with a good resistor value, if you do not know what hardware he has? You are good at extrapolations, so I am quite convinced you can figure out a good resistance value using that method. Kai said:

Yes, there are situations where I buy help because of time or complexity constraints. But there has never been situations where I have bought help with school work. Do you think I should have? Why all these attitudes, Per? Can't you rise a clear question? By the way, do you know what "project work" is? Here, a group of students have to do a project and are graded as group, which means that each one of the group gets the same grade, even if someone was especially lazy... It isn't a question of "attitude" if I decide to not steal candy when shopping my food. It isn't a question of "attitude" if I think it would have been wrong to have someone else do my school work. It isn't a question of "attitude" if I decide to not read other peoples mails just because they have forgotten to lock their monitor. Our personality is created by a huge number of small decisions, opinions, experiences and rules. It isn't a question of "attitude" to have an opinion of where the line between right and wrong lies. It is just parts of what makes me me. But you are still running around in circles discussing the wrong thing. I am not, and have a number of times in this thread explicitly said so, against helping students. But I am of the view that such help should be similar to the help a teaching assistant at the school would give. That is not "attitude". If the teaching assistant does not supply turn-key solutions, then neither should I. If the teaching assistant do supply turn-key solutions, then you would not see threads like this in the first place. Yes, I do know what project work or group projects etc are. But at a school, I'm pretty convinced that group projects does not include help from professional consultants, until you have reached research level, in which case there often are joint projects with grad students and people from different companies. But maybe you can supply a link to schools where entry to mid-level ee or cs group work is done with external consultants doing the actual work. Remember now that we are not talking about helping with details. We are talking about helping with the complete turn-key solution. It is after all the lack of a posted turn-key solution that is the base of your complaints. You consider this thread "no-help" because Aamir couldn't cut complete code from the web page and paste into a source file and compile and download. Kai said:

But if it isn't relevant to this thread, then maybe you shouldn't use it as an argument. Why did you interfere in a reply to Andy?? Why do you assume to be meant, when I talk with Andy?? So the question then is: Who did you mean in your post? Did you mean that Andy mocked Aamir? That Andy expected Aamir to bow? But we could look at it differently: Why do you assume to be meant, when I or someone else talk with Aamir? A problem here is that you regularly post quite wide statements, straight out in the air, so how will anyone ever be able to know exactly who you are talking about? If you post a response to me, you often use arguments collectivelly describing most responders to this thread. The same when you post a response to Erik or Richard. So why not when you respond to Andy? And you have answered me earlier specifically meaning that Aamir has to beg for help, so it would be reasonable to think that I was targeted this time too. And as already mentioned in another thread: When I did write the response, you did not have any quote by Andy in your post. That was a later addition, somewhere in the 45 minutes between the original post and the last update. Kai said:

Your misunderstanding here is that you think a person can be helped if people on the forum do not step in and ask questions - (your very disliked requesting more information). The only thing I dislike is, that you think you have the right to "request", Per. You have the right to "ask", but not to "request". Remember the forum rule, if you dislike someone's "performance", then please ignore him. Once more mixing the meaning of forum rules with the right to ask for additional information. Maybe not the best reference for "request", but Princeton will do: express the need or desire for; ask for; "She requested an extra bed in her room"; "She called for room service"
ask (a person) to do something; "She asked him to be here at noon"; "I requested that she type the entire manuscript" a formal message requesting something that is submitted to an authority inquire for (information); "I requested information from the secretary" the verbal act of requesting Usage example 1 contains the meaning "ask for". Didn't you just said that I have the right to "ask for"? Usage example 2 contains the meaning "ask (a person) to do something". So I may not ask the OP to say what diodes he is using? Note the "inquire for (information)". Note that a request is not limited to mean an order. It can also be used for asking a question. If you do read my posts, I have never given Aamir an order to supply information. I have written "What is..." or "Can you give us..." or similar. |
