In the old system (now defunct), a person's Karma was derived from the sum of the Karma for the messages posted by that person.
That doesn't seem unreasonable to me: it seems quite sensible that a person's reputation (or "karma") should derive from the quality of their posts - If a person's posts consistently gain positive votes, it seems quite reasonable that they'd gain a positive reputation (or "karma"), and vice-versa

Anyhow, it's all history now...
