Those adapters, as I recall, are nothing but two connectors with some wires between them with and then moldded into a colorful plastic blob.

And then as Andy stated, the attached keyboard or mouse needs to be a device with the multi-protocol support. I suspect that as more and more devices loose their old USB 1.1 compatibility in favor of being USB 2.0 the old multi-protocol capability is disappearing.
