'But how is it that I, born two thousand years and half a planet removed from that Jewish carpenter's son, am so devoutly Christian? It certainly isn't because of peer pressure. Modern America is no less atheistic than Modern Britain. I suppose you could presume that I'm just a superstitious simpleton, but I would point out that it's Dr. superstitious simpleton. It's not a trivial question, why I or anyone would choose Christianity?'
I have no idea why an intelligent man would wish believe delusional stuff about some sky fairy, and that is why it interests me.All religion stems basically from desire for a father figure which appears to be built in the human brain. As for why other people need to believe in a sky fairy it suspect that mostly they need to bolster their prejudices, because of they way they were bought up, because in large parts of America you cannot move without hitting a church, but mostly because they are taught not to think and not to question. And a lot of it is because they are very lonely and need something to cling onto. I think most people would if someone said to them 'hey you've got to read this book because my friend the invisible sky fairy wrote it, and he made the universe in his spare time and he never shows up but I believe in him, because if you don't believe in him then hes gonna kick your ass, and all my mad friends who stand in the street shouting about him say he talks to them in their heads'. then I think they would start backing away and just keep smiling and nodding. |
