So you plugged the board with the short into one USB port.....things burned so...

You plugged the board with the short into another USB port??

The USB front panel interface board that you show in the picture distinctly has burned traces on both USB ports pictured.

You should check the main board at the other end of the cable(s) that connect to the 1x8 connector to see if there is fusing on there or burned traces there too.
