It is quite fine to attach things to a USB port in order to get them working. I believe that Raghu appears to intend to get his device working as a full USB device. ...... The main thing to be careful about is to not short out or overload the 5V rail coming out of the computer. Some times a short like this can make the computer crash. Other times it will blow a fuse, trip a polyfuse or make a USB port power switch chip detect an overload and turn off the power. Thanks for explaining my device so well. Yes the data aqcuistion unit is powered by the 5V from USB port. As to the second point of shorting out the 5V , it already has happened once (Murphy!) and my Sony notebook just shut down power to that USB port. Since this unit has generated lots of interest, here is the link to the full specs : http://labjack.com/u3/specs And yes the aspect of the the 5V from the USB port being noisy is worth noting. Raghu |
