I should know better than to believe all PCs scrupulously adhere to all the USB standards. I've just plugged a board with a supply-to-ground short in to a PC, and this PC didn't wince. The USB power out should be current protected, and I've previously seen "port overcurrent" warnings pop up. In this case the USB cable seems to have suffered as it's now unreliable. The PC never missed a beat though!
