That's The Curse Of Stuff That "Works" (sic): someone sees some nasty piece of stuff like that which "Works" (sic) and assumes that it must, therefore, be "OK" (who needs to bother reading the spec?) - thus perpetuating and extending the problem!

I think much of the confusion about RS232 arose that way...
