I already know that when helping someone, I can't box myself into thinking that the problem is covered by the subject line or the information in the initial post. As usual, the first two thirds of a thread will consist of the "dragging" phase, where one or more regulars tries to gather enough evidence to even know what the problem is about. The final third can then focus on possible solutions, Sad, but true ... and when I'm looking for information for myself, I know that threads with "help" as subject can be ignored.
The people who get hurt by subjects like "help" are other students. Students who do know to use Google to find out what information is available before creating own threads, but who fail to notice these threads because they think it was an accident of Google to reference the link. I have to agree. If one wanted to make this a really informative site, it would have to start by attaching truly relevant, and perhaps cross-referenced subjects to the threads. In some cases there may be several, as they tend to wander, not always harmfully. RE |
