#147123 - email vulnerability
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hi Steve,

... have you seen his AcmeKlein site ?

No, I haven't. Please elaborate.

Outlook defaults to enable viewing attachments inline for example. (Or did, I don't use it)

Actually, that was only an issue for viewing graphics inline. Apparently there was some way for malicious code to be embedded in a jpeg image, and that could execute during the inline viewing process. They've patched it. I am currently unaware of any attack vector that could compromise your computer directly in an email message. As far as I am aware, the malicious code has to be in an attachment and then it has to be opened on your computer.

Now, if I am wrong, and there is a vulnerability in the email message itself, please tell more. I want to know. But from what I can tell, the only vulnerability in the message itself is (once again) the user (e.g. opening attachments without thinking, or clicking on the links in a phishing email, etc.).

Joe
