Linux and Unix may have been designed with security as a goal, but reality would suggest that goal is still yet to be realised - considering early viruses were written for Unix systems! (Why?? universities had unix systems - so the hackers would attack them - pre windows of course) How about the dreaded 'buffer overflow' bug? Seems that was quite prevalent in Unix systems! I dare say internal knowlege of the code helped here. Take the top 10 virus - how many of them target *nix systems? Probably none - Windows is the target.
Far for me to say that Windows is secure - we know its not. Given the same level of attack, would Linux fare any better? Whilst the response would most likely be faster, would the damage be any less? Especially considering if the same quality of Windows users were running Linux? One could liken the whole argument to suggesting that if everybody drove Mercedes, that the road toll would drop overnight. As for ease of configuration - just try getting a wifi dongle working on an embedded linux system! Its a minefield. |
