#147119 - Caveat Emptor
Responding to: ???'s previous message

Have you ever read "The Cuckoo's Egg?"

Yes, Cliff is an old internet based acquaintance - have you seen his AcmeKlein site ?
I suspect that the most significant vulnerability of either OS is the naivete of the user. For example, was it Jeff who wrote that a Windows machine can be infected just by "receiving" an infected email?

That's true,Outlook defaults to enable viewing attachments inline for example. (Or did, I don't use it)
But who would actually, intentionally, modify their OS with something that was "making the email rounds?"
No, because these patches are applied to source code and recompiled. Caveat Emptor, yes, you mighte be compromised, but, if you know what you are doing, you would be safe to apply a patch. Of course, if you don't know what you are doing, you shouldn't fiddle. People are happy to blindly install binary patches from Microsoft, with NO idea what they are going to do, and allow them to view the insides of their computers - in fact despite your opt-outs, microsoft will happily overrule your preferences to install a "patch" it thinks you ought to have, whether you want it or not, and certainly without asking.
