#147047 - Design Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Linux has had its share of vulnerabilities, so what makes it potentially more robust? Linux, and Unix, were designed from the ground up with security as a main goal. Windows is "designed" by marketing. It also has designed in vulnerabilities (google for "defective by design") because Microsoft wants access to your machine. Given that Windows is more prevalent, it is also specifically targeted. So if we took away Windows and everybody used Linux, would we not suffer the same problems? No, absolutely not. That's a myth spread by Microsoft (aka FUD). It's true that Linux would be targeted more often, but what matters is whether an attack would be successful. The only Linux users that would be vulnerable would be those clueless enough to do dumb things such as visit questionable websites while logged in as root. There might be some other successful attacks, but they'd be few and far between. Or maybe more so since the internals are available for all to see. That's one of the things that makes open source more secure. Microsoft has had vulnerabilities that have gone unpatched for years. That doesn't happen with open source; patches are typically available within days, sometimes hours, of discovery of a vulnerability. |
