#147074 - Security
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Jeff Post said:
Linux, and Unix, were designed from the ground up with security as a main goal. Windows is "designed" by marketing.

And yet the only machine I've ever had that was seriously compromised was a Linux machine.

The only Linux users that would be vulnerable would be those clueless enough to do dumb things such as visit questionable websites while logged in as root. There might be some other successful attacks, but they'd be few and far between.

I still don't know how my Linux machine got compromised. But the attacker had root access and I most definitely did not ever surf with root--I was only logged on as root when doing system configuration changes; the kind of thing you should be root to do.

And even if I had abused the root account, that's the whole problem with OS security: You can't make a secure operating system that "clueless" people are going to be able to use; or, on the other hand, clueless people can make even a good security design irrelevant. And the fact is that you will have clueless people using any popular OS.

Absolute security is an admirable goal, but no more achievable than absolute safety in an automobile. It doesn't matter how the OS was designed.

Regards,
Craig Steiner
