A spelling bee is a contest, but I don't know what an insect currently in short supply in the U.S. has to do with spelling.

BTW, I'm quite sure that my pedanticism with respect to syntax, grammar, and orthography, has its roots in that I'm a native German, and learned English as a foreigner. That made me very self-consious about such things when I was a youngster.
