Read Why Business People Speak Like Idiots, by Fugere, Hardaway and Warshawsky, ISBN 0743269098. The short answer is because they are idiots, but read it anyway--it's very entertaining (and useful for spotting business BS).

Now you know why I don't work in industry anymore. Working in academia has its problems, but at least the people you work for have functional brains.
