#136216 - The future of Circuit City Responding to: ???'s previous message |
The Circuit City retail chain is in serious trouble, and is losing out to Best Buy. It they don't do something soon, they will be out of business, and everyone will lose their jobs.
And while it is tough on some employees to lose a high paying retail job, that doesn't change the facts that the economics were all wrong. As the cost and margins on the electronics fell, there is just not enough profit to support the Circuit City salary structure. Consumers, including me, are not willing to pay more for our TVs in exchange for a supposedly better qualified sales person. Jobs change. The value of certain jobs change. And it really is a case of adapt or die. We are far more accepting of such creative destruction here in America. And we are rewarded by low employment, and rich rewards for economic success. Many times in my career I have had my portion of the Electronics industry fall apart. And each time I have had to start over. Very disruptive, but most of the time I wound up better off. (Sometimes not!) I am currently seriously stressed by the collapse of telecom switching equipment industry. (Does anyone need a 5ESS switch?) Would it be better for the government to try to get rid of internet telephony to preserve dial phones and their associated jobs? Or is it better to let the old phone industry die and be replaced by the internet? Even in pain, I vote for the new. |
