or maybe, since they only read C, they're looking too deeply into what your deliverables are...

You might go with the whole notion that this is a black box, and because of the software requirements specification, assembly language was necessary for "performance reasons".

If they keep they're scrutiny on a more abstract level, the V&V docs can be used to prove the deliverable performs as intended...
