The monitoring device in this case is a PC using some kind of terminal software, not important at the moment. I'm trying to get my hardware sqwuared away first.

I'm looking to monitor, capture, possible store, and have for analisys after the fact actual serial data being exchanged between two uC's. Typical project for us is making gateways from our boards (Foundation Fieldbus, Profi-bus) to customers devices (some serial protocal, HART). This is usually a half duplex master (our boards) to slave (customer devices). This communication is 3.3VTTL, no higher then 38400 BAUD.

We have hardware and software tools for monitoring the higher level protocols, but alas nothing for the poor low level stuff. This tool I'm considering puting together may just fall under catagory of "nice to have" vs. "Essential to get job done". I'm in the process of updating my schematic and will post later with newer information.

Any how, hope this makes things more clear.
