Do you want an instrument that sits on the desktop or do you envision an IC that is part of a circuit?

Monitor can mean anything from a CRT on the desktop to a piece of firmware that performs debugging functions.

I'm not saying that you're wrong in using the term, but I do wish you'd be more specific.

It's been amply stated that a logic analyzer or a digital oscilloscope will likely enable you to sample and examine, after the fact, of course, the behavior of the lines on your serial port.

I'd like to see this cleared up, however.
