Housing in the Colorado front-range area is not cheap, but, if you stay out of Boulder, and out of the mountains, you can get a pretty roomy house in a pretty decent neighborhood for about $250K.
I know, I know ... most people don't want to live in a teensy little 3000 square foot house, but I've found my house quite adequate and it only offers about 2400 square feet of clutterable space. We have 1600 sq ft here, plus a separate laundry room and "tool room" (where I keep all of the power tools and crap; could be a nice workshop if it wasn't 120 degrees in the summer). Four bedrooms -- one for my "office" with the computers and assembly area, one for my wife's office, a third guest room and the master bedroom. No kids, yet. The guest room will go away, I suppose. We got lucky -- it was $155k but recent stupidity on the part of buyers has increased its value to easily $230k in the two years we've been in the house. And, as any reasonable person knows, the only time you actually benefit from the increase in home values is when you go to sell. And even if I did sell, I wouldn't actually benefit because to buy a similar home would cost what I'd get for my current place. So, whoop-de-doo. All I know is that salaries in Tucson haven't risen 50% in two years, and a lot of my friends can't afford anything reasonable. -a |
