today most new work is many levels deeper.
Example. The first generation integrated circuits were so simple that you could expose the die and see the entire circuit with a microscope.
What percentage of engineers involved in new ic design can draw an accurate schematic of a complete cutting edge pentium processor. I agree that it is just multiple identical interconnected building blocks. But still you would die of old age before you got a correct schematic completed. Now how could you do that from scratch with little or no applicable schooling?
