When I studied electronic engineering a decade ago all students found the maths challenging. We quickly learned that any lecturer over about 50 years of age was almost certain to use some unfamiliar bit of maths and ask "Didn't you do this at O-level?" - No! I never did O-levels; I got grade A in GCSE maths and grade B at A-level* and I have never seen the maths that they took for granted.
A few years later I had a part-time job teaching basic computer skills to first year Leisure and Tourism students in order to make ends meet while writing my PhD. I was utterly amazed that (a) Half the students were ate university at all, and (b) they seriously expected that I wouldn't notice their blatent attempts to cheat on their homework. * Apologies to those outside the UK; I have no idea what O-levels, A-levels or GCSEs are in your curency. |
