If you can find one, I'd recommend you look at the old Motorola MECL System Design handbook. The fourth edition was published in 1988. It contains the very much definitive work done by William R. Blood, the source of much of the commercial signal integrity (IBIS) software used today. This will give you lots of useful information, though it doesn't go into multilayer design issues.
