Ian,
A bit more optimism here, i don't see Western Culture decaying, i do see it changing, as it always has. Western Civilization didn't decay once we stopped burning witches, learned that the earth wasn't the center of the universe, that that universe was not supported on the back of an enormous turtle, or the earth 4000 years old and created in 7 solar days. Hell, we even survived the abandonment of Greek and Latin classes. I think the signs of decay are all there to be seen. They are less to do with discoveries or our understanding of the world about us, as you examples suggest, but more to do with the relationships between people and the value of the same. The decay in these is seen in the ever increasing divorce rate (no committment to relationships), single parent families (abandonment of relationship), increasing pressure to speak more yet say less (political correctness diluting relationships), huge increase in pornography (devalueing relationships). Humans cannot function as societies when relationships break down on such a regular basis. Look at any prior civilisation and you will see the same pattern. We have passed the zenith and are in decline. It may take hundreds of years but we are nonetheless in decline. This is a good thing not a bad thing - it is necessary to dismantle what we have now in order to build something better. Ian |
