"A "true" multitasking cpu, one that can execute more than one instruction at once. A true multitasking CPU? Would that be: 1. a CPU running a multitasking OS? Say an 8088 running Minix 1.0. 2. A CPU with hardware support for a multitasking OS, perhaps a MMU, fancy hardware context switching support, seperate FPU. Example: SPARC v7 circa 1988. 3. A superscalar multi-issue CPU with pipelining, multiple ALU's, FPU etc... capable of issuing 2 or more instructions per clock cycle. Example: SuperSPARC circa 1993, late 90's Pentiums. 4. A hyperthreaded superscalar/multi-issue CPU like the current Intel Xeon. 5. A multi-core superscalar multi-issue CPU like the AMD Opterons and UltraSPARC IV+. (I think Intel has something cooking here too...) 6. A massively multi-core superscalar multi-issue CPU like Niagra. Then there's threaded programs on shared memory multiprocessor systems, NUMA... etc... Which "multitasking"? Does a running WDT count? While I'm thinking about it... Does anyone remember Steve Ciarcia building a parallel 8052 machine for cryptography in Circuit Cellar (Byte magazine) in the mid-80's? I seem to remember something about it, but I can't remember any details, and Byte didn't survive the 90's, so there's no online archive to search that I'm aware of. Rob |
