#102631 - 8051 computer Responding to: ???'s previous message |

Did anything ever come of the 8051 computer system Craig was thinking about building? (Not the SBC, but the full computer board?) While I was planning on waiting to announce details, Phillip M. Gallo and I have been working on this on a time-available basis. Phillip has been doing some great work getting the microcontroller to generate a good black & white video image. Meanwhile, I've got the PS2 mouse and keyboard functioning, have a SecureDigital interface working for disk-like storage that will access the card with FAT12/FAT16 making it easy to transfer files from Windows (I haven't implemented the full FAT12/FAT16 yet), and I'm currently working on Ethernet connectivity which seems to be working well. Surprisingly (to me) it appears that a single high-speed 8051 is going to be able to all these things and still have time left over for processing. Phillip and I were planning on getting the component parts working before taking the project public for public participation, comments, and public contributions to the OS design. I'm sure that Erik will cringe when he sees the project because it's definitely not the "right processor for the job." But it's a fun exercise to see how much we can get an 8051 to do all by itself--so in that light it's very much the right processor for the job. :) Regards, Craig Steiner |
