I think its important to remind ourselves though that the 8051/2 is not a true multitasking microcontroller; and if syncing it to the video is absolutely required, wouldn't executing other tasks (ie : programs to run on it, the OS, NIC, sound card) interupt this and cause glitches in the video.
From a challenging standpoint, its amazing you could get that processor to do all of that at once, and I am still amazed to be honest; but from a practicality/speed standpoint I still think one 8051 dedicated for the video would be best; that way we could change specs on the system processor (such as speed and memory, as well as large amounts of programming and the OS without it affecting the second cpu (video). If the main processor was a Silabs chip running at 100Mhz, and it could communicate serially with the video for displaying text, I think it would be easier to mess with - and nobody would ruin the video output tweaking the programming. I also think its very important to have some type of sound system on it; as this should be relatively easy to interface. Lets face it, if your already planning on interfacing a FAT file system in a memory card to it, why not add a 16-bit DAC with onboard preamp and optional line out... if you could get this RTOS to run and load/play mp3s and wavs out through the DAC, I would thoroughly be impressed. Years ago I actually used an 8-bit DAC and a bunch of gates to create a very rudementary soundcard for an ISA bus. I'd like to help anyway I can as well, and by the large number of replies I think this project has alot of backing and support. Speaking of which, Craig, how is the 8051 communicating with all of these devices? Are you dedicating IO pins/ports to specific hardware, or are you using an 8bit address, 8 bit data bus from ports 1,3? |
